about My Room

I teach fifth grade at Attwood New Tech Magnet School in Lansing, Michigan. I teach all subjects, so my classroom has to accommodate all types of activities. I set up my classroom in a way that benefits students being in it for the majority of the day.

Classroom Layout

I recently spent time thinking through how my classroom would be set up to effectively use the space and give as many seating options for my students as possible. I implemented flexible seating. There are yoga-ball seats for students who need more movement, there are fidget bands on some of the chairs which students can use with their feet, there are raised tables in the back for students to stand up, and students can choose between stools and traditional chairs. I chose to incorporate all of these seating options because I realize that students have different engagement needs.

In addition to flexible seating, I have set up my classroom in a way that is constantly promoting collaboration. I have tables instead of desks because I don't want to students to have so many separate spaces. I have also set up my tables in groups so that students are facing each other and it makes it even easier for group work and turn-and-talks. There is also a space in the back that I refer to as the "chill corner." There is a small table, futon, ottoman, and inflatable chair. This space is used for projects, meetings, and when a student needs a break to regroup.

Finally, I intentionally chose to make my classroom layout as open as possible. I don't want students to feel trapped or closed in. I feel that having the library open, the chill corner exposed, and the windows open whenever possible helps to make the room feel bigger than it is. My goal for my classroom was to make it feel welcoming and comfortable. All of the choices I have made were to achieve this goal.

our work

My school is New Tech and STEM. This means that, in addition to the regular core subjects, we complete projects following the Project Based Learning (PBL) method. Below, I have linked some of our projects and lessons that align with my school's focus.

Plants on Mars: One of fifth grade's biggest projects. Students learn about what plants need in order to survive while also researching how to sustain plant life on Mars. In collaboration with another class, my students created a book called Plant on Mars which was displayed in the Capital Area District Library and is currently housed in our school's library.

Culture ProjectAt the beginning of the year, the entire school participates in a three-part culture project so that the students can learn more about our school's purpose. Fifth grade's part is all about 21st Century Skills. In this project, students find out more about oral communication, written communication, collaboration, and agency.
